Traveling is the perfect way to take a break from the everyday routine of our busy lives to recharge and feel inspired. Just 1.5 hours from Bogotá there’s a hidden gem to be discovered called Termales Las Mariposas (@termaleslasmariposas) – the perfect place to disconnect from everything, but at the same time connect with yourself and nature.

This property was developed by a natural medicine doctor over the last 30 years and it’s been recently opened to the public on Airbnb. The animals, the lily pond, and the tropical fauna that surround it are fascinating. The views, rivers, and private hot springs make this place the perfect oasis for those who love nature and I can honestly say this is one of the most beautiful places I have visited.

Visiting this magical place is the perfect plan for those who want to enjoy a few nights away, perhaps as a couple staying in the small cabin or as a group getaway in the large house. You can also rent both houses to have the property completely private for your group with space for up to 15 guests. Visit this link to view the property on Airbnb –>

Location & Getting There

Termales Las Mariposas is located in Chocontá, which is as little as 1.5 hours from Bogotá depending on how you arrive. The host will send you the exact location after booking, but the important thing to know is that it’s simple to find and is accessible without a car. I recommend using Uber to arrive, which will cost a maximum of 90K Pesos. Or from Terminal Norte, the “Guateque” bus with Valle de Tenza or La Macarena leaves frequently and can drop you off at the entrance of the property, but be sure to let them know beforehand. The price of the bus can vary but expect to pay around 15K Pesos. The bus journey is approximately 1 hour. This same bus can easily be used to get back to Bogotá at the end of the trip by getting on at the other side of the road of the Finca, so by doing Uber to get there and a bus to get back you’ll have the most convenient option.

A Hidden Oasis

Upon opening the green and red gates on the side of the road, the scenery immediately changes to reveal a hidden oasis in the mountains. On either side of the path, huge tropical foliage line the way. Colorful flowers, vines of dark green monstera leaves, hummingbirds, and butterflies guide you from the busy road to the main house of the Finca.

As the Finca comes into view, I can’t stop taking in all of the surroundings. A massive lily pond with a suspension bridge is on my left and I can see the charming cabin we are staying at straight ahead. Patricia, the owner of the property, comes running up to us and gives me a quick tour of the grounds as I’m still in shock trying to absorb how beautiful this special place is.

There are TWO private hot springs to enjoy, roughly each the size of a large swimming pool. The scenery that surrounds the hot spring pools feels like you’re at a private resort with the amount of vibrant green tropical plants they have grown over the last 30-years. Natural hot springs are often praised for their health benefits like blood circulation, stress reduction, pain relief, and improving skin problems. The water is sourced directly from the mountain and has high levels of iron and magnesium, which gives it its yellow tint. The temperature of the water that fills the first pool is close to what you find in a hot tub, making this perfect to enjoy during the chilly evenings. The water has cooled down in the second pool so you can enjoy it more during a warm day and it has a roof over it so it can be enjoyed even if it’s raining.

The farm also features a few beautiful hikes and terrain to explore. My favorite was “Los Puentes”, a short walking path with various bridges that connect. The plants here feel like I’m walking through a tropical rainforest rather than the mountains in Bogotá.

Accommodation Options

Termales Las Mariposas currently has two accommodation options you can enjoy. The Cabin is perfect for couples or small groups and the Casa Grande can host up to 10 people. Or you can also rent both options to have the entire property to yourself.

The Cabin is super charming and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. There’s a fully-equipped kitchen, which is important as there are not any restaurants nearby so you will need to bring all your food to cook. There is also a small dining area, living room, bedroom, and two bathrooms. I loved the outdoor porch area in front of the house as there is plenty of seating to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening.

The Casa Grande is just around the corner from the house and would definitely be ideal for a group trip. The house has three floors, with a total of 4-bedrooms so there is plenty of space to spread out. There’s also a massive kitchen and open-floor living area for hanging out. However, one of the best features of this house is the glass-enclosed entrance, a green-house type of space with two-floors of unobstructed windows that immerse you in the surrounding forest.

Is Termales Las Mariposas for you?

Termales Las Mariposas is for the traveler looking to totally disconnect from the outside world (there is no internet or much phone service here) and looking for a holistic experience to connect with nature. It’s one of the most beautiful farms I have ever seen and perfect for a romantic getaway, group trip, or a super unique place to visit during a trip to Colombia. Being able to enjoy private hot springs is the ultimate way to relax and you’ll feel completely rejuvenated after your stay.
